“The grid is a fundamental basis for designers, which allows them to act variably while remaining within
one system.”

The Trinity-Sergius Lavra is the largest operating monastery in Russia, founded in the first half of the 14th century.
It is included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.

concept
When developing the identity, it was important to preserve the original style of Lavra, but at the same time give it new modern touches.
In the process of work I turned to the history of the monastery and church art of the 14-15th centuries, inspired by ancient man-made things, architectural solutions and ancient frescoes.
The plasticity of the forms of the Lavra style, characterized by not having temporary layers and shells, reflects the period of handicraft. There is a soul
in the imperfection
of such forms.

In order to create the logo,
I turned to the history of the Trinity Monastery, when there was no abundance
of architectural forms. St. Sergius secluded himself in his humble cell in the wilderness. Since that moment the history of Lavra started.
The logo combines a sign and
an inscription.
The semicircular arched shape is a metaphor of the sacral space, within which there is
a mystery of communication between man and the Creator.
The inscription "lavra" has
a tiered form, which reflects
the abundance of architectural
forms of the monastery.
The logo is placed in the shape
of the portal of the Trinity Cathedral, the oldest and the main temple of the monastery.

style

Inspired by miniatures
from the hagiography
of St. Sergius of Radonezh
and woodcuts.

studios

There are several craft studios
in the monastery. The main task was to combine different visual styles into one system.

I drew a separate sign for each studio, inspired by Michael Shvartsman's hieratures.
This sign was divided into
four parts and assembled into
a pattern. Each studio has its own personalized identity, which is assembled into the overall style of the studios using a system of patterns.

projects
A large-scale celebration of the 600th anniversary of the discovery of the relics of St. Sergius of Radonezh.

For the project I developed a sign, identity, printed and promotional products, posters, banners, etc.

Logo, diploma, medals.

The process of work technically resembles the process of woodcut: cutting out white from black. Six-color silkscreen printing.

Wisdom has three faces: when seen from afar, it is grand and severe; on closer approach, it is tender and welcoming; when we are close enough to hear it, the words of wisdom are severe and demanding. — Chinese wisdom
